Caught Grinning - 27

WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2013.

This was at Kuruva Islands, Wayanad, Kerala, 11/Nov/2012, 03:33 PM. I casually clicked this picture when my wife was talking to my son pointing to something on the other side of the river.

Later, we were surprised when we noticed that, the angle with which I had shot the frame had made the depth in the picture almost invisible... and hence it seems as though, with one finger, she is blocking that person with the baby from falling backwards!

Take a look at the full picture and then the zoomed-in view!

Caught Grinning - 26

This was at Lamb's Rock in Ooty, 03/Apr/2012, 12:38 PM. When I saw the monkey and goat come in front of each other, I clicked these two pictures within a span of 5-6 seconds. What I had clicked casually, resulted in a funny scene: The first one makes them appear as though they were about to fight with each other. But, the latter shows that they just passed across each other and there was no fight!

Caught Grinning - 25

This was at Ross Island in the Andaman Islands. This slanted kangaroo bin tied by its neck to the coconut tree besides it... made a grinning sight!

Kuruva Island, Wayanad Trip

Wayanad - This trip vs. last trip

A trip to Kuruva Islands in Wayanad, Kerala has been on our list for quite some time this year as it got postponed a couple of times after scheduling. We had also visited Wayanad area previously once, in May 2008. This is our second trip to Wayanad.

During the previous time, we went to the Lakkidi area that is near Vythiri. Lakkidi is at the southern end of Wayanad. But Kuruva Islands, where we went this time, is at the northern end of Wayanad. Basically, Kuruva Island is about 50 KM north of Lakkidi area .

At Lakkidi last time, we stayed at a very nice resort called Stream Valley Cottages. That was a great experience and we visited many places like Pookote lake, Lakkidi view point, Chembra peak, Soojipara water falls, Edakkal caves, etc. Drive during that road trip route was also very scenic from Mysore via Nanjangud, Gundlupet, Bandipur wildlife sanctuary, Sultan Bathery and Kalpeta. We undertook that trip much before I started this blog, so I do not have a travelogue of that trip on my blog. However, I had earlier posted a thrilling experience that we had at that time, here.

About this trip...

This time, we had booked at this small resort called Pepper Green Village / PGV resorts which we found on the internet and booked in advance. PGV is at the northern end of Wayanad, just across the Kuruva Islands separated by a small stream of Kabini river. It is located at a small village called Palvelicham, and it is just ~30 KM inside Kerala from the Karnataka border town of Kutta. We drove from Bangalore via Mysore and Hunsur.

The shortest route from Mysore to PGV is the 98 KM route through State Highway 33 that passes through towns like Hampapura, Madapura etc., and goes adjoining Kabini river and Nagarhole forests. However, several stretches of that road is said to be very bad. The better route is 125 KM long from Mysore via Hunsur and Kutta that goes like this: Mysore – Hunsur – Kutta – Tholpetty – Kattikulam – Palvelicham – Pepper green village. So we took that route via Hunsur and Kutta shown in this map here.

I did my standard preparations for my road trip. Checked fuel, air, lube, etc. Took note of some of the Maruti service center details at Mysore and Hunsur, just in case it becomes necessary. My car's next service was due another 2000 KM away, so I felt this ~650 KM total trip should not have any issue. We halted at Hotel Dasaprakash Gandhi Square, Mysore on Friday night and then proceeded from Mysore on Saturday morning.

It was totally a 3 nights and 3.5 days trip, though we stayed at the resort only for 2 nights and 2 days. We visited Kuruva Islands (a.k.a. Kuruvadweep), Thirunelli Temple, and Iruppu water falls during this trip.

Here is how the trip panned out...

It is not Coorg Fish Fry as the picture shows.
It is not Coorg Pork Fry as the wordings intended to say.
But... it is Coorg Fork Fry! Enjoy!

Caught Grinning - 23

I took this picture at about 6 PM on 09/Apr/09, on the way from Kadur Railway station to Chikmagalur. We were driving for a picnic and we stopped at this cool-drink shop for a break. So hot and dry was that April evening, that this cow was in search of something to quench its thirst right at the doorstep of the shop we were standing. While the water tap seen nearby was leaking precious water, this cow stared only at me and these cool-drink trays that had only empty bottles, sadly disappointing! A frame that actually did not catch me grinning, but caught me moving!

Iyarkai

I am publishing two of my old poems here.

1) Oru Malarin Payanam, à®’à®°ு மலரின் பயணம்: Means, A Flower's Travel.

I wrote and recited this at a Kaviyarangam, கவியரங்கம், named Iyarkai, இயற்கை, meaning Nature, at our College, way way back in 1990. It mildly expresses the occasional drop in motivation that could occur to a person due to any lack of progress in certain times in life, and then the way the person springs back to agile activity to move forward swiftly, by learning from several Natural phenomenons existing around us: Like, the tiny rain drops that fall steep down from the sky ultimately to help growth of vegetation on earth, and, the colourful fragrant roses that bloom every day always in the middle of several thorns!

2) Muyarchiyil Oru Padi, à®®ுயற்சியில் à®’à®°ு படி: Means, A Step In Trying.

I wrote and recited this at the valedictory function of the Tamil Literary Association, தமிà®´் இலக்கிய மன்றம், of our College, again, way back in 1991. It expresses how a person can turnaround from a temporary non-progressive state that reduced motivation in the past, in to a very positive, confident stature, and keeping up the continuing march forward in Life.

Caught Special - 21

Where: At Subrahmanya Road railway station, while traveling from Mangalore to Bangalore.
When: 02/May/09, Saturday, 09:45 pm.
What: When I saw this goods train standing parked on the neighboring track at this train station, particularly because the area was lit only by a lone lamp post next to it, I felt it is an interesting frame to capture without using my camera's flash. I clicked this frame through my window ensuring that I keep that post and lamp out of my frame. Please note, all my Caught Specials are raw pictures as recorded by my camera, without any post-processing by an image viewer or image processor software. To me, this picture looked cool, with the one-side illuminated objects in it, slightly dark-blue hue due to the illumination by the lamp post, the lamp not in view, the other vacant track that is present in between, a drinking water spout pedestal cutely in the middle, and, the right hand side of the frame fully in dark. I thought it is an interesting Caught Special in my collection. Take a close look.

Caught Special - 20

Where: At  Hunkal Woods (26 KM from Chickmagalur) inside the Thogarihunkal Group Coffee Estate
When: 12/Apr/09, Sunday, 06:05 am.
What: I clicked this early morning scene with the dull-lit 140 year old British heritage bungalow in front, and with the backdrop of the hills, silhouette of the treeline, clear light-blue sky, and... the bright moon atop.

Pigeon Surprise 7

Well, the pigeons were back in our son's balcony! They settled on to an empty flower pot again, on the one that had just plain soil filled in. They laid 2 eggs, as usual, in a span of 48 hours. They kept them well. Brooded... and finally hatched them. The little ones were very cute. They grew up in front of our eyes every day. The adults kept a very close watch on them. Whenever we playfully tried to poke our hand near the little ones, the adults bounced on us with a noisy pat with wings and a yell to shoo us away. They were always guarding the balcony. They brought food for the little ones regularly. Our son kept watching them all the time. He talked about giving the young ones a better shelter on colder nights. He felt low whenever the adults didn't come back and show up at the balcony for a stretch of 10-12 hours.

While this was going on one side, there were more pigeons coming and trying to settle in our main balcony as well as our son's balcony. They kept laying more eggs... we saw nearly 10 eggs over a period of 4-5 weeks... and we kept aborting all those! Would have been a menace if we had allowed them to progress!

These two little ones though, grew and learned enough, and finally they hopped down from the pot to the floor. They walked around. They played around in the balcony for a few weeks, and they grew slowly and steadily.

From the eggs that were laid around 18th May, finally the little one's grew up well... and... flew away around 10th July. A full cycle was complete successfully!! Take a look at the pictures.

Andaman trip

Sorry. This is a very long blog post with nearly 220 pictures and hopefully with some information. I hope this is of use for some readers in the future.

Exotic Andaman - Holidays Package by MakeMyTrip (MMT). We booked this 8-days and 7-nights trip about 3 months in advance. The package included return air-fare, hotel stays, local tour transport costs, guide and entry fee costs, breakfast and dinner. They have Premium and Standard options.

There are no direct flights to Port Blair from Bangalore. They fly either from Kolkata or from Chennai only. But MMT had this package with a Kingfisher Airlines charter flight from Bangalore directly to Port Blair exclusively. In our case, since they did not get enough headcount bookings just before the travel date (they had only about 40 bookings), we were routed via Chennai, both for Bangalore - Port Blair and return, by the regular Kingfisher's flights.

                       - Then a boat drive, and then a speed boat ride, then a walk.
                       - To see limestone caves, mud vulcanoes, and tribes in the forest en route.
                       - And return later in the night.
                       - This plan did not look practical for us.
     - We considered a few places to go on our own and decided against those.
                       - Jolly Buoy Island
                                - Was just closed for the upcoming off-season.
                                - From 1st or 2nd week of May monsoon rains start.

                                - We were not sure how attractive the beach there was.
                                - Was a little far away, and we felt there is not many interesting stuffs there.

     - Stay at Sea Shell Hotel Port Blair.

Day-8 (Sun):
     - Late check-out around 9:00 AM.
     - Departure flight at 11:55 from Port Blair, and return to Bangalore via transit at Chennai.

About the trip

Overall we had a great trip.

We learned that Andaman is not pronounced as Andhaman that we say in Tamil. It is Andaman.

The place has a lot of Hindi and Bengali speaking people. And a lot of Tamil speaking as well.

Port Blair is a nice little city. Downtown is well developed and maintained, has good roads, and traffic is well regulated too. The beaches are pretty good. The beaches at some remote places are the ones which are great with emerald blue-green crystal-clear water that is amazing.

Port Blair main as well as other islands are very green with lots of trees. We never imagined to see so much of greenery. It was 1st week of May, peak of summer, but still we never saw any dry or wilted vegetation anywhere. Many islands have a lot of forests, many of them completely uninhabited.

1st or 2nd week of May is generally when the monsoon rains set in. Andaman sees heavy rains and storms from later part of May and so, that will not be a good time to go there. We were also worried about rains, but luckily for us we had only 3 spells of short rains. Only one of that affected us a bit when we where at Elephant Camp Beach on Havelock Island.

While on the main island, we were always in South Andaman only, that is, Port Blair surroundings. The Andaman islands have very limited electricity generation options. Their Hydel power plant somewhere in North Andaman is said to be still coming up. Most of the islands get the power from Diesel Generator based power plants!

Our hotel stays, all with breakfast and dinner buffets were all nice. One of the menus had the very tasty Surmai fish that is popular in this area (see photo of price menu below). The stay at Rose Valley was outstanding. Sea Shell Havelock was superb. Sea Shell Hotel Port Blair was just fine.

Scroll down for more details about the places, a lot of pictures, and the Make My Trip experience summary.

Caught Grinning - 20

This was at Dodddabetta in Ooty on 25th August 2007 11:44 AM. It was all bright and sunny till that time when a sudden cloud formed and rained quickly. As it stopped and we walked back towards our car parking lot: We saw this flower girl completely covered in a blue poly sheet at the bottom left corner of this picture, selling yellow lilies. See her? :-)

When: 09/Apr/09, Thursday, 08:41 pm.
What: I clicked this rose that was next to a garden light. The frame I chose was such that the CFL fixture (that was pretty close to it) is not visible in the frame, while the rose and the leaves around it appear illuminated.

Caught Grinning - 19

This was on 24th August 2007 09:39 AM. Just after we drove past Bandipur wildlife safari point, and as we headed towards Mudumalai, there was this elephant herd appeared in front of us on the road. This caretaker or mahout was moving along with them. And then suddenly this little calf was on the ground and we thought he was beating it. But he was actually cleaning the soil from its body with a plant bunch. So for a moment we were displeased, but then we had wide grins back on our faces - and then I quickly clicked this frame.

Caught Special - 18

Where: At Srirangapatna
When: 02/Jan/07, Tuesday, 09:20 am
What: These two ducks were having their first morning swim on Cauvery River by the side of Amblee Resorts, Srirangapatna. A clean frame with just water alone visible, and the shady sunlight on the two ducks. And this almost "trademark" pose of the two ducks, which I actually got after a long wait focusing on them and following them with my camera.

Pigeon Surprise 6

What to say... it was a tragedy, yet again!

For the first 3-4 days after the little ones came to see light, they were all happily feeding and growing up etc. It was a nice sight for us all days and nights.

But on day 5 we first found both chicks on the floor, down from the pot soil. We wondered how the mother brought it down.

The very next day, one was missing suddenly. We suspected that it might have walked to close to the balcony edge where there is a gap through the grill, and probably it might have had a fatal fall all the way down from our 4th floor (level-5 actually!). But there was no way we could confirm. It was, just, missing from the scene!

And, again, the very next day, our son saw the mother grabbing the other little one and trying to fly out of the balcony grill, and, lost grip of the chick -- while on flight! The chick fell on to the balcony railing of the floor below us! But... luckily, it seemingly survived, even after that. However... a few hours later... we did not find it there. Disappeared from the scene!

That was the end of Solomon Grundy!

How sad.
