Around Bangalore: 6 - Chunchi Falls

Destination: Chunchi Falls

Direction:
      * South, South-west of Bangalore, on Kanakapura Road, turn left at Kanakapura.
      * Kanakapura to Chunchi 29 KM.

Type of place: Waterfall, rocky gorge / valley.

We visited last on: 22/Oct/07, Mon.

Suitable for: A day trip.

Best seasons to visit:
      * Summer may be dry, and heavy rainy season may not be suitable.

Distances
      * 89 KM from City Railway Station.
      * 81 KM from Central Silk Board, Hosur Road.

Route maps on Google
      * From City Railway Station, Click Here.
      * From Central Silk Board, Hosur Road, Click Here.

Timings: Open only during daylight timings.

Weekly off: None.

Food
      * Kanakapura (29 KM before Chunchi) en route has some restaurants.
      * It may be better to carry food, snacks, juice and water along.
      * There is nothing available near the waterfall.

Specialties
      * The drive from Bangalore had scenic agri-farms and lakes. Now they are all almost gone.
      * The 29 KM from Kanakapura to Chunchi was nice through village roads, sighted some birds too.
      * The river travels through rocks and falls down below.
      * Long walk from the car park on the level ground to go closer.
      * You walk through some narrow path, shrubs / trees, boulders, tiny water streams, etc.
      * There are no sign boards, no proper routes, no barricades, no nothing. Keep track of your walking route.
      * Be careful and never go closer to the cliff edge.
      * Many people sit at the edge of the cliff. Very risky. Do not do it.
      * While we were there late evening, it suddenly started raining, we had to run back to the car park.
      * Rocks were skidding, we kind of lost way, there were only ~10-20 people around who disappeared too.

Travel Tips
      * It is a narrow road from Bangalore. Start say by 7 AM, and have a steady and peaceful drive.
      * There are a lot of rough rocks to go near the water fall, so watch-out when you get in.
      * We carried our food from home, ate en route.
      * Carry drinking water, and umbrella also if needed.

Note: This is a series where I post details and tips about some day-trip locations around Bangalore. You would note that, the date of our visit to some of these places was quite some time back, so some of the detail need not be currently valid. However, I think the major part of the information will still be useful to readers. Do check around by phone or other means about these places to know the latest details and then make your plan. Enjoy your travel. Have fun.

  1. Nice post. Chuchi falls is a lesser known and a medium sized waterfalls, more known for the rocks and gorges around the falls. Explore more about Chunchi Falls.
