What are you waiting for...?

The first time, and the only time, I heard this song was on Radio, one fine morning, sometime in 2005, when Radio City's RJ Darius Sunawala played it while I was driving to my office. Wholesome mesmeric song! Added to that, Darius' praise in a husky base voice, prior to and towards the end of the song, did add icing to my experience with this song.
When I partially heard Darius announce that the song he was going to play was a great one by A R Rahman and Pakistani singer, late, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, I knew nothing about its credits and details. But the song just rejuvenated. It infused energy.

Years later, when I dug and found out that this song is part of the same A R Rahman Album Vande Mataram as Maa Tujhe Salaam (Thaai Manne Vanakkam / தாய் மண்ணே வணக்கம்), I was very surprised - more and particularly because no one on Radio is ever playing this wonderful song. Just don't know why. I think it is loaded with so much of qualities that it can be played every day on all Radio channels.
Name of the song: Gurus of Peace
Singers: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, A R Rahman
Album: Vande Mataram (Sony Music, Columbia Records)
Released: December 1997 (To mark the 50th anniversary of India's Independence)
Lyrics: Mehboob, Tim Cody, Dinesh Kapoor
Backing vocals: Katy Stephenson, Emma Bigwood, Gemma Austreng, Brittaney Love, Georgina Gill
    Acoustic guitar: Mahesh Tinaikar

People who have heard the song 'Poraale Ponnuthaayi' (போறாளே பொன்னுத்தாயி) of ARR from the Tamil movie Karuthammaa (கருத்தம்மா) would instantly recognize that this song is a remix of beats from that superb traditional-feel melody duet song, but in a much different blend and more impressive complexion. Apart from ARR's fitting voice to this song, the other specialties I feel in it are:
     * Firstly, the great theme in the song - to spread and propagate peace, friendship and love.
     * Deep meanings of the lyrics throughout the song.
     * The punchy meanings in 'What are you waiting for', 'Somewhere we have to find a new way to peace'.
     * The overall energy and soul in the music that rejuvenates us and pumps in loads of cheer.
     * The sensational chorus by the children at the start, in the middle, and the end.
     * Ustad NFAK's conjuring voice throughout and his exciting aalaps spread along in the song.
[It is sad to note that he passed away at a young age of 48, even before the release of this Album]
     * The wonderful fusion of soul-stirring Indian and international music.
[I am not an expert in music and so cannot refer the types and parts of music correctly]
[So I will cautiously stay away from those]
    * The sudden appearance of the nice, distinct, tabla interlude.
    * The music grows on us, ramps up and attains a shivering summit towards the end.
    * And, last, but not the least, the gleeful laughter of the children, slowly... fading out... at the end. Heavens.

Lyrics - Gurus of Peace*
Joy on sunshine, Joy on blue skies,
Sunshine break the cloud, Blue skies breaking out,
Joy on sunshine, Joy on blue skies,
Sunshine break the cloud, Blue skies breaking out,
Joy on sunshine, Joy on blue skies,
Sunshine break the cloud, Blue skies breaking out,
Joy on sunshine, Joy on blue skies,
Sunshine break the cloud, Blue skies breaking out...

Chanda suraj laakhon taare hain jab tere hi yeh saare
Kis baat par hothi hai phir thakraarein
Keenchi hai lakkeere is jameen pe par na keencho dekho
Beech mein do dilon ke yeh deewaarein

Duniya mein kahin bhi dard se koyi bhi...
Duniya mein kahin bhi dard se koyi bhi
Thadpe to humko yahan pe
Ehsaas uske zakhmon ka ho ke
Apna bhi dil bhar bhar aaye roye aankhein...

What are u waiting for, another day another talk
Somewhere we have to find a new way to peace
What are you waiting for, another sign another call
Somewhere we have to find a new way to peace

Doori kyon dilon mein rahe faasle kyon badhte rahe
Pyaari hai zindagi hai pyaara jahaan
Rishte badi mushkilon se
Bante hai yahaan pe lekin
Tootne ke liye bas ek hi lamha

Ishq dava hai har ek dard ki
Zanjeer ishq hai har ek rishte ki
Ishq saari hadhon ko tod daale
Ishq to duniya ko pal mein mita bhi de

Ishq hai jo saare jahaan ko aman bhi de
Ronaq ishq se hai saare aalam ki

Chanda suraj laakhon taare hain jab tere hi yeh saare
Kis baat par hothi hai phir thakraarein
Keenchi hai lakkeere is jameen pe par na keencho dekho
Beech mein do dilon ke yeh deewaarein

Duniya mein kahin bhi dard se koyi bhi...

Sunshine break the cloud, Blue skies breaking out,
Joy on sunshine, Joy on blue skies,
Sunshine break the cloud, Blue skies breaking out

What are u waiting for...
What are u waiting for...
What are u waiting for...
What are u waiting for...
