Iyarkai

I am publishing two of my old poems here.

1) Oru Malarin Payanam, ஒரு மலரின் பயணம்: Means, A Flower's Travel.

I wrote and recited this at a Kaviyarangam, கவியரங்கம், named Iyarkai, இயற்கை, meaning Nature, at our College, way way back in 1990. It mildly expresses the occasional drop in motivation that could occur to a person due to any lack of progress in certain times in life, and then the way the person springs back to agile activity to move forward swiftly, by learning from several Natural phenomenons existing around us: Like, the tiny rain drops that fall steep down from the sky ultimately to help growth of vegetation on earth, and, the colourful fragrant roses that bloom every day always in the middle of several thorns!

2) Muyarchiyil Oru Padi, முயற்சியில் ஒரு படி: Means, A Step In Trying.

I wrote and recited this at the valedictory function of the Tamil Literary Association, தமிழ் இலக்கிய மன்றம், of our College, again, way back in 1991. It expresses how a person can turnaround from a temporary non-progressive state that reduced motivation in the past, in to a very positive, confident stature, and keeping up the continuing march forward in Life.

Padharaavaai Nelmaniyae - 2

பதராவாய் நெல்மணியே - Padharaavaai Nelmaniyae - You will become a husk, paddy seed.

Remember last week's posting that went like this: <<Long long time ago, this picture in the Tamil Weekly magazine 'Ananda Vikatan' caught my attention that I cut it and wrote this short verse, sometime in 1990 I think.>>

I guess it was a little (!) cryptic and many did not quite understand it. I thought of doing a translation for the benefit of the world! Here it is!

Sunrise

Impressed by this Sunrise Coffee print ad picture, I had cut one and wrote this small piece - long long time ago, sometime around 1989 while in college.

Starring Suchitra Krishnamurthi and Humayun Niaz Ahmed Peerzada, Sunrise Coffee commercials were one of the very famous in print and on TV, always impressing with the stunning photography, visuals and actions of the two leads.

A quick googling showed that Humayun himself has also posted the same picture on Flickr here!

Un Ilakku

Un Ilakku
உன் இலக்கு
Meaning, Your Target.

These lines just grew in me as I was driving home a couple of weeks ago. A few lines about that latent talent hidden deep inside, but completely unsure by his own. This is to that sparky fiery young who all but looks unknowing the real self-potential, appearing worried and scared too. I say, victory is the only target you have got, take it up, forget & ignore everything else... the world is wide open for you, young!

Solomon Pappiah

It was a special occasion when Dr GC and my friend Ganesh(a!) had succeeded in inviting Shri Solomon Pappiah from American College, Madurai at that time to visit and preside over our Literary Association event. I even created this big banner invite seen below, got principal's approval and displayed it on the main notice board. I made it special to form His name with the first letters of each line. Later, on the day of event, he gave the packed hall a cracker of a speech that had all of us thinking, as well as laughing our stomachs out, for an hour. Ganesh had also pulled me into this role of delivering the prestigious vote of thanks for the event. An honor I must say, completely thanks only to Ganesh. The very short verse that I wrote and delivered in front of Him and the hall of audience was quite special, because, as I spoke, he spontaneously reacted with his trademark appreciation of 'ha' at certain moments. Can't forget forever.

Vidiyumvarai Kaathiru

விடியும்வரை காத்திரு - Vidiyumvarai Kaathiru - Wait until Dawn.

This brilliant photograph was part of a Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder advertisement some 25 years ago. A young mom with her tiny tot on her shoulders. The mom's face and eyes are displaying a thousand wishes to future of her toddler. Such a magnificent still this, inspired me to a short little poetic verse.

Valaikudaa Vazhakku

Gulf War, 1990-91. Firing scud missiles and patriot missiles amongst them, troops were battling each other. But around there were also hundreds of other sorrowful and pitiable scenes. There were huge number of civilian deaths around the war front. Many youngsters and women were also among them. There were kids who lost either both or one of their parents. There was a massive oil spill at sea front. Innumerable birds too went through tough torment.

A kid who lost its mother... looking around... and wondering...
Naano Siru Pillai, Enakkondrum Puriyavillai...
நானோ சிறுபிள்ளை, எனக்கொன்றும் புரியவில்லை...

...and, a host of other puzzling questions in that budding child's mind is this poem: Valaikudaa Vazhakku - வளைகுடா வழக்கு.

Kuppaithotti

A Tamilnadu & Pondicherry inter-state level "Student Poets' Meet" (maann kavignar maanaadu / மாண் கவிஞர் மாநாடு) was arranged as part of Bharathidasan's centenary celebrations, at the Yadhava College Madurai, by the Madurai Kamaraj University.

On arrival at the venue, the topic given to us was Kuppaithotti (குப்பைத்தொட்டி), which means Dust-bin.

We students were to write a poem on that topic within the given 2-3 hours. Later at the meet we read it on stage and hence debut (அரங்கேற்றம்) as a Student Poet (மாண் கவிஞர்) where veterans like Shri Mu Thamizh Kudimagan, who was the Assembly Speaker in Tamilnadu at that time, and our very own Shri Kavipperarasu Vairamuthu would be on stage!!

Here is the poem I wrote there and later read in front of those giants and packed audience. I remember there were tons of students who participated in this competition. Though I did not win any prize, the metaphor in my poem seem to have been heard distinctly. Because, when Shri Thamizh Kudimagan spoke later, he even picked my line and said he saw variety in student poets' thinking and was impressed. Completely unexpected that I heard him refer my metaphor during his speech, in front of that pretty packed hall - Yes, it was surely something!

Imaiyora Sumai

Chitrakavi (சித்திரகவி) is a form of poem written to be meaningful and at the same time appear as a figure. This poem was written by me at a university level (inter-college) Chitrakavi competition - long long ago. It was, surprisingly, awarded a Silver medal.

Topic and rules given were:
                              Figure: Linga
                              Starting word: 'Imaiyora' (இமையோர)
                              Ending word: 'Sumai' (சுமை)

Vaai Thirandhu Pesaayo...?

'Vaai Thirandhu Pesaayo...?', meaning 'Would you open your mouth to speak...?', is from the mind of a talented sculpt0r. After several months of hard work, he was on the verge of finishing one of his most beautiful works, a masterpiece... a beautiful statue of a Lady. One day... he sees tears suddenly rolling down her cheeks... and, he, absolutely shocked, speaks to her from the bottom of his heart...

வாய் திறந்து பேசாயோ...?
